Music

The music curriculum aims to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We aim to provide a solid understanding of the principles of music including performance, composition and analysis. Development of these key skills will allow students to produce a range of outcomes according to the abilities, needs and aspirations of students. These include success in formal qualifications, if chosen, at the end of KS4 and KS5 but also supports the development of transferable skills such as resilience, teamwork and confidence.

The curriculum is broad to cover a range of compositional, performance and analytical skills allowing students to develop the necessary skills to become a musician in their own right but also succeed in the academic aspects of music. We ensure that all students perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres and styles. Students learn to use their voices to create and compose music on their own and with others and have the opportunity to learn a range of musical instruments. Students will also understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, through the use of the musical elements and appropriate musical notations.
