Overview

The social sciences department is made up of psychology, criminology, sociology, child development and health and social care. Social science qualifications provide an excellent foundation for a wide variety of careers and allow our students to gain fascinating insights into and make sense of what’s happening in our ever-changing world.

The team are made up of 7 teaching staff with a wide range of specialisms who work hard to engage with all of our students and provide an environment where achieving excellence is celebrated.

A Level Psychology

Specification – AQA

Topics covered –

Paper 1: Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology
Paper 2:  Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology, Research Methods
Paper 3: Issues and Debates, Cognition and Development (optional unit), Schizophrenia (optional unit), Forensic Psychology (optional unit)

Skills developed – Analytical skills, critical thinking/evaluation of studies and theories, methodological skills,

Homework – Independent learning tasks – consolidation of understanding of content covered in lessons, application tasks, examination style questions, flipped learning.

BTEC Level 3 Applied Psychology

Specification – Pearson BTEC Extended Certificate

Topics covered – Year 1: Approaches and Applications in Psychology (exam)

Conducting Psychological Research (coursework)

Year 2: Health Psychology (exam)
Forensic Psychology (coursework)

Level 3 CACHE – Childcare and Education (EYE)

Topics covered– Child development, Child health, Observation and Assessment, Safeguarding, Play, Emergent Mathematics and Literacy, International perspectives, work experience unit and evidence based portfolio

Skills developed– practical experience on work placement, partnership working and professional development, reflective practice for planning, leading and evaluating participation in activities

Homework– Independent learning tasks – consolidation of understanding of content covered in lessons, coursework, work placement diary, preparation for observations and completion of portfolio of evidence and reflection of professional practice.

Level 3 Diploma Criminology

  • roles and responsibilities when working in a setting

  • the influences that affect holistic development
  • everyday care routines and the types of activities that can support the development of independence an introduction to supporting children through transition

Unit 2: Development and well-being 0-5 years

  • holistic development from birth to 5 years
  • the factors that contribute to development
  • the care needs of individual children
  • the importance of supporting the health and well-being of the child
  • how to encourage and maintain good hygiene and hygiene routines
  • how to safeguard children to keep them safe and healthy
  • the importance of routines for everyday care in supporting children’s development
  • recognising the importance of a secure base for children’s development
  • the transitions experienced by children, and the possible effects on children
  • how to support children through transitions to provide consistency and reassurance including the role of the key person in the early years

Unit 3:  Human growth and development through the life stages

  • stages of development from conception to birth
  • life stages and • holistic development
  • theoretical perspectives
  • factors impacting on human growth and development
  • transition and significant life events across life stages
  • the role of care planning in relation to meeting individual needs and promoting well-being.
